Giuseppe Mele is a family pediatrician since 1982 who has devoted his life to improve the quality of life of children promoting vaccines campaigns, healthy eating habits, physical activity, and fighting hard against smoking.
Giuseppe Mele is President of Paidòss, National Observatory on Children and Adolescents, Member of the Advisory Committee of AIFA (Italian Medicines Agency) for the pediatric area and founder and President of SIMPe – Italian Society of Pediatricians.
The Observatory PAIDÒSS is born from a group of experts in children with the aim of helping to place the health issues of children and adolescents at the center of social and political choices of the Country. It aims to improve lifestyles and health conditions of the population of pediatric patients (0-14 years) over the entire Italian territory, choosing as modus-operandi to involve all the players in the healthcare system.
He has collaborated, and he still collaborates, with the Italian Ministry of Health and he has published more than 20 scientific papers.

Clinical, scientific, research and didactics activities in the fields of pediatrics, child neurology, clinical genetics of neurological and neuropsychiatric child diseases, and biotechnology.
From January 1989 to December 1993, he attended the Division of Pediatric Neurology at Columbia University, New York, USA and at Columbia Genome Center, New York, USA, with the position of "Post Doctoral Researcher Fellow", and following with the position of "Clinical Researcher". During these years, he worked as a clinical and scientific researcher in the areas of neuroscience, with particular reference to child neurology and clinical genetics of neurological child diseases, under the direction of Profs. R. Lovelace, T. Gilliam and R. Trifiletti. At the Department of Neurology, Division of Pediatric Neurology, Columbia University, New York, USA, he also obtained his PhD in Child Neurology.
From November 1995 to June 2006 he was an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Neuroscience at the Department of Neuroscience, Cornell University Medical College, New York, USA, under the direction of Profs. F. Plum, F. Beal, working in the fields of child neurology, and especially neuromuscular diseases of infancy.
Additional didactic activity, as well as is being certified by the several courses held for many years as an Adjunct Professor at University of Catania, Italy, in the fields of neuromuscular diseases and neurophysiopathology.
In 2009 he was invited as an "Expert evaluator", for the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission for the scientific research projects in the area "Genomics and Systems Biology".
In January 1997 he obtained the full time position of Researcher, and following, since January 1st 2003, he become First Researcher at the Institute of Neurological Science, The National Research Council of Italy, Catania, Italy.
He has been among the invited Members of the International Collaboration Consortium Group of Study of the European Neuromuscular Centre, on Congenital Muscular Dystrophies and on Spinal Muscular Atrophy. He is the invited Coordinator of the Child Abuse Group of Study of the Italian Society of Pediatric Neurology (SINP).
In the field of biotechnology, he conducted specific researches and scientific studies, in Italy and as well in the United States, related to the application of new techniques and methods regarding the "Analysis of Fetal Cells in Maternal Blood during pregnancy for non invasive prenatal diagnosis of genetic diseases”; results of these studies have been published in international journals and also presented at International Conferences on this topic, including at the National Institutes of Health, NIH, Bethesda, USA. In addition, due to innovation and scientific relevance, some of the techniques and methodologies tested, have been patented through national Italian patent, as well as the PCT international patent extension.
The clinical, research, and scientific activities, expression of his scientific publications, chapter’s books, as well as the subject of reports in numerous national and international invited speaker conferences, included various areas of neuroscience, and especially pediatric neurology, clinical genetics, neuropsychiatry, and biotechnology. On the above scientific fields, he has published over 90 papers in international journals, including Nature Genetics, Lancet; Annals of Neurology; American Journal of Medical Genetics; Neurology; Human Molecular Genetics; Epilepsy; American Journal of Human Genetics; Pediatric Neurology; Journal of Child Neurology; Journal of Pediatrics; Journal of Neurology Neurosurgery and Psychiatry; European Journal of Pediatrics; Neuropediatrics; Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery.
Some of his publications, such as those regarding the “Identification, mapping and cloning of the gene of Wilson’s Disease” (Nature Genetics), those regarding the “The Clinical characterization and Genetics identification of one of the genes of Spinal Muscular Atrophy” (Hum Mol Gen; Annals of Neurology; Am J Human Genetics), and those related to the “The Classification of Congenital Muscular Dystrophies” (Pediatric Neurology), represented well recognised and crucial scientific contributions for the clinical and genetics interpretation and characterization of above pediatric neurological disorders.
Currently he is the Principal Investigator of a Multicentric Scientific Study on clinical, genetics and epigenetics of Child Abuse.
Agozie Ubesie

Dr Ubesie is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria and an Honorary Consultant Paediatrician with the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital. He received his medical and post-graduate trainings in Nigeria. He graduated from the University of Nigeria in 1998 and subsequently did his post-graduate training in Paediatrics from 2002 to 2006 at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu. He is a Fellow of the Medical College of Paediatrics (FMCPaed) and the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) in the Faculty of Paediatrics. His career path has focused on public health issues affecting children in resource poor countries such as HIV and malnutrition. After his post-graduate training in Paediatrics in 2006, he joined the International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP), Columbia University as Pediatric Clinical Advisor. He helped develop robust pediatric HIV services that have contributed to scale up of pediatric HIV services in Nigeria particularly in the area ART and PMTCT. He later became a Regional Team Leader for the Columbia University Program, supervising teams that worked with supported States in Nigeria to strengthen their health systems. In 2010, he returned to the University of Nigeria in as a Lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics. In 2012, he was a Visiting Research Scholar at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center/University of Cincinnati. He has presented scientific papers at local and international meetings. He has over 30 peer reviewed publications.
